Website builder or custom development: how to choose
The launch quote is only part of the choice between a website builder and custom development. After publication, someone needs to update the offer, receive enquiries and look after the site. Start with those jobs rather than a preferred tool.
A website builder is a reasonable fit when its editor and available features support the work you actually need to do. Custom development is worth considering when important journeys exceed those limits or need a different hosting and maintenance arrangement. Owning custom code does not automatically produce a more useful or faster website.
List the jobs the website will need to support
Consider an illustrative service business. A manager changes prices and opening hours, adds a service and publishes photographs. Visitors choose a service, leave their details and receive a response. That description does not yet justify building a custom content management system. First check whether an existing platform supports the work.
A different scenario might generate quotes using internal data and different terms for business partners. Data access, permissions and failure handling then need their own assessment. A polished page in the editor is not evidence that this workflow operates correctly.
Ask the supplier to demonstrate the case that is most difficult for the proposed tool before approving the platform. Finding the limitation after every page has been designed may mean revisiting both the tool and completed work.
Find out what your team can update
A builder provides an editor, but that does not establish how easily an employee can perform your task. Ask to see a price change, a new service and a mobile page check. Include publication in the demonstration, not just changing a value in a draft.
A custom website can use a CMS, or it can require file changes and another build. Custom development does not automatically include an editing interface. If the proposal does not specify one, agree who will make updates and how that work will be arranged.
Consider editing boundaries too: which sections can change, how accidental damage is avoided and how a previous version can be restored. Unlimited layout controls may not help the employee who simply needs to correct a phone number.
Compare the same scope in both proposals
A proposal covering copy and enquiry delivery is different from one covering page assembly alone. Resolve those differences before attributing a price difference to the technology.
Scroll the table horizontally
| Area | What to establish | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Editing | The actions an employee can carry out | Demonstrate a real content update |
| Forms and integrations | The destination of data and failure behaviour | Follow a test submission through to receipt |
| Ongoing costs | Platform, services, hosting and maintenance | Request separate charges and responsibilities |
| Handover | Ownership of accounts, domain, assets and code | Review the access and file handover list |
| Leaving the solution | What can move and what must be rebuilt | Check documentation and a necessary workflow |
Check what moving the website would involve
Page export is different from an independent working website. Tilda documents an export option with limitations, including an active paid subscription to keep receiving submissions through its forms and services that cannot be exported. Wix does not support hosting a Wix website with another provider. The current vendor documentation is linked below; check the terms before committing.
Asking whether you receive an archive is not enough. Ask what happens to forms, the catalogue and editing after a move. Data export, domain transfer and moving a working website are different tasks.
Custom code needs a proper handover as well: the repository or source files, deployment instructions, service configuration and owner access. If everything lives in the supplier's personal accounts, another team does not yet have what it needs to maintain the website.
Assess search readiness and speed on the actual pages
Check that the proposed solution supports the structure you need: distinct page addresses, clear headings, ordinary links, appropriate language versions and control over whether utility pages appear in search. A menu item labelled SEO does not answer those project-specific questions.
Measure the version that will be published, especially on a phone. Oversized photographs, external widgets and unnecessary animation can slow a site regardless of the tool used. Custom code that has never been tested has no automatic performance advantage.
A claim that a technology ranks better is not a sufficient reason to choose it. Search readiness involves useful content and an accessible structure. You cannot infer a site's eventual search results from the name of its editor or framework.
Account for the work after launch
List recurring costs separately from development: the platform plan, domain, connected services, hosting and maintenance. Not every project needs every item. For each one, establish who pays and what stops working if payment ends.
For a custom implementation, ask who updates dependencies, checks changes and restores a failed deployment. For a builder, agree who manages the subscription and connected services, updates content and checks forms. A managed platform removes some technical tasks, but it does not appoint someone inside your business to look after the website.
Try a representative page and a real workflow
Before committing to the full project, test a main page and one essential journey in the proposed tool. Have the future editor update content and the person handling sales receive a test enquiry. If an integration matters, demonstrate the data transfer rather than a picture of it in a design.
Choose a solution whose limitations are understood and acceptable for your next tasks. The reason to commission custom development is to meet specific requirements with a maintenance arrangement you can support.
